Rhyl school changes its pupil mobile phone policy

Christ the Word Catholic School, on Cefndy Road, said the changes will be implemented from January 7.

From then, every classroom will have a numbered mobile phone pouch on the wall near the teacher’s desk.

All pupils must put their phones into one of these numbered pouches on entry to every lesson.

The teacher will allow them to take them back at the end of the lesson; this will be replicated during registration time

When pupils have an assembly, phones are to be placed in their pockets or bags – any visible phone will be confiscated.

Pupils will not be allowed to take their phones out of the pouches to go to the toilet, but will be permitted to have them back at the end of every lesson and during breaks and lunchtime.

In a disclosed email circulated to parents and carers it stated: “The purpose of this is to ensure that all pupils make maximum progress in school and are safe.

It added: “Any refusal to comply with this initiative will result in a follow-up sanction in line with the school’s engagement and behaviour policy.

“Please can you impress upon your child that this is not a choice – all phones must be placed in the pouches provided.

“The only exception to these expectations will be for pupils who already have a prior private arrangement with the school for reasonable adjustments to be put into place for a medical need or for translation purposes.

“We appreciate your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s education.”
