Meet the Sound Radio LTD Board

Sound Radio LTD is a not for profit company working to boost digital connectivity in North Wales by giving volunteers of all ages the opportunity to learn and produce creative content such as live radio, podcasting, video production and more. Supporting individuals and groups to increase their own skill set in a co-operative environment.

The company was formed in April 2017, it started broadcasting in September 2017 and moved in to its current studios in Kinmel Bay in April 2018.  It currently has four directors who are not paid and support the company with their own time and resources, they have between them an experienced background in radio with over 50 years experience combined, then are keen to work and develop technology, know the North Wales community and have management skills.

They are as follows:

Gary Carr

Gary worked as a presenter on a Monday to Saturday afternoon show on a North Wales commercial radio station for approximately nine years, seven years part-time and two years full-time where he increased listening figures in that period. He also worked on a community radio station on RSLs in 1998, 1999 and 2000. He has also worked on a Rhyl based community radio station.

Gary has, since 1975 run his own mobile disco business across the North Wales coast and still continues to do so.

Gary was Llandudno Community Radio Limited’s Chairman and has a wide range of musical interests and is extremely competent in broadcasting, he is well known locally and his talents will be beneficial to the project. He joined the Sound Radio board in April 2018

Craig Kennealey

Craig has worked in radio since 2009, starting with student radio until he joined Point FM community radio station based in Rhyl in 2010. He spent 7 years as a volunteer with station as a presenter, technician, web content developer and various other rolls.  In 2016 he won two awards at the Community Radio Awards, Gold for ‘Best Entertainment Show’ and Silver for ‘Best Male Presenter’.

Craig also has a keen interest in music and audio production and works as a mobile DJ in North Wales

Paul Toal

Paul has worked in management for a range of statutory and private bodies. He is acutely aware of the management and governance processes required to run a successful organisation. He has commissioned services on behalf of local authorities and has manged both large numbers of people and budgets.

He has manged teams who have been involved with the provision of training and has managed grants on behalf on central government and partnership bodies.

He has been involved in radio for the last 10 years as both a broadcaster and as a director in Sound Radio.

He is competent is providing IT and technical services and has broad range of management and technical skill necessary for the smooth running of small and medium size business.

Paul has a current DBS and is also a qualified social worker.

Steve Astley

Steve Astley has worked in the music industry since 1976.

Steve started in Radio as a volunteer in Hospital Radio as a presenter in 1996. From 1997 worked in a team setting up a new community station (Shore FM ) responsible for building and setting up broadcast studios and joined the board as Technical Director. Also ran courses in conjunction with the local college in “Radio Programming”. Then in 2013 joined Point FM as a presenter doing various programmes.

From 2018 he joined the board of directors at Sound Radio again doing various speciality shows daytime and evenings and sharing tasks to set up and the day to day running of the station with the other members of the board.

Steve has a wide range of musical interests and is extremely competent in broadcasting and well known locally and his talents will be beneficial to the project
